Grannys fried okra

2017 - Bart Jordan

Fried Okra is a staple around Thanksgiving time, and whenever we get a pile of people together at once this is a go to recipe. The best part is that unlike most fried foods, fried okra is just as good as a leftover.

  • 1 lb package of frozen Okra or fresh if in season

  • Butter Milk or Whole Milk with a beaten egg

  • 1 Egg

  • Good Peanut Oil (it should be dark yellow and smell like Peanuts)

  • 3 cups Bisquick

  • 1 Cup Corn Meal

  • 1T Garlic Powder

  • 1T Onion Powder

  • 1t Black Pepper

  • Beat the egg into 2 cups milk.

  • Pout the Milk/Egg mixture over the Okra and add more milk until the Okra is barely covered

  • Soak the okra in milk for at least an hour.

  • Strain the Okra and set aside.

  • Get a large bowl and put in Bisquick, corn meal, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper and mix with a fork until blended.

  • Put the Okra into the flour mixture and mix around until all pieces are completely covered.

  • Put the whole bowl into the fridge and let it sit for at least 4 hours but 8 is better. NOTE: If you skip this last step your breading will fall off during the cooking process.

  • Fry until golden brown.
